The NYC Reissue has a big low end, somewhat less gain than many earlier Muffs, and the familiar scooped Big Muff tone section. The early versions used 1N6263 silicon Schottky diodes, which gave the fuzz a little more high end and a slightly sharper character. These were later replaced with 1N4148 diodes, which smoothed the gain structure slightly while retaining the overall voice of the circuit.

Tonally, the circuit seems to combine some of the characteristics of the 1976 Ram's Head pedals with some Russian Muff DNA. The result is a big, full low end and smoother fuzz character, but with the familiar mid scoop and overall voice that still makes it unmistakably a Big Muff.
